Flying Fish Exhibition

Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th September 2010

11am to 4pm

Flying Fish Artists is a social co-operative based in Barnstaple. Members share workshop space to work on their art. They also feel strongly about art having a positive impact on the wellbeing of individuals and communities.

Community projects include the design of literature for the local ‘Walk and Talk’ scheme and a poster design concerning North Devon’s Memory Cafes for an international conference on dementia.

We were asked to provide original artwork and photographs for local hospital wards, some of which featured local scenes, helping to bring the ‘outside inside’ and inspiring people to visit these beautiful places once they are discharged.

Similarly, artwork for a supported homeless project aimed to encourage engagement in creative activities as well as enhancing the feel the feel of the accommodation. A mural for a shop in Barnstaple town centre uplifted an area blighted by boarded-up windows, creating an interesting focus point for passers-by of all ages.

Our winning design for the People’s Biosphere competition resulted in a project with local schools and the North Devon Biosphere to raise awareness of the locally endangered glow worm. This culminated in the ‘River of Light’ lantern procession with children and parents walking along the Tarka Trail to encourage them to use and project community resources.

We are hoping to obtain a grant to help us produce a book of the illustrated ‘River of Light’ story and possibly an animation film.

The suggestion from Hallsannery to host a September Art Show beginning 23rd September, is most welcome and we look forward to meeting you there.
