When local couple Cathy and Toby first came to visit Hallsannery, I knew theirs was going to be a truly gorgeous ‘wedding weekend’. As a talented make-up artist ‘in the business’, Cathy had seen many beautiful weddings, and had a clear vision of what she and Toby wanted from theirs.

And, as you can see from the photos, their Hallsannery wedding did not disappoint. With a stylish, natural yet stunning look in mind, they chose their suppliers with care.

Adorning the house with ‘in season’ flowers by Heather at Church Park Flowers, the spiral staircase became a vision of white bridal blossom, with eucalyptus providing the most glorious scent as Cathy made her entrance in an oh-so-elegant dress by Anna Hougton of Bideford. With the bridal party dressed in contrasting blue, the Hall became the ultimate in intimate settings for their Ceremony, as, surrounded by friends and family they exchanged their vows. Signing the register in the curve of the stairs was particularly moving and beautiful – a thoughtful touch to a magical Ceremony.

The newly married couple then treated their guests to canapes on the rhododendron-bedecked East Lawn and on the front terrace overlooking parkland and Estuary beyond, before enjoying a fabulous wedding breakfast laid on in the chandelier’d Dining Room.

The festivities moved seamlessly from day to night… and as the photos (by talented photographer Jim Wileman attest), the day was a fitting testament to the happiest and most beautiful of couples!

Happy Half-termers! Posted June 9, 2017

The sun shone (most of the time!), the gardens bloomed and our Hallsannery half term guests enjoyed the very best of Devon! With 4 generations getting together for the week to celebrate a special lady’s birthday, Hallsannery’s beautiful Dining Room played host to family meals, whilst young and young-at-heart enjoyed the freedom and space – both inside and out.

Making the most of our eleven gorgeous ensuite bedrooms in the main house (including the welcoming ‘accessible’ downstairs bedroom with its own luxury wetroom) and the 4 additional bedrooms offered by the Coach House, the family were able to spread out to sleep, whilst coming together to enjoy the communal spaces. But rather than hear about their stay from us, here’s what our guests themselves had to say…

‘We had a lovely week celebrating Kath’s 90th birthday, with all her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. A brilliant house with beautiful views and everything we needed. Great fun get together… we could get used to this!’

If you’d like to ‘get used to it’ too, we have availability the second half of October half term – do send us an email to find out more.

This February half term we hosted two smashing friends and family celebrations at Hallsannery.

The first, a 4oth birthday celebratory weekend for a very special husband, was ably organised by his wife and family. Bringing together friends from all over the country, the large group enjoyed a fantastic weekend of Devon activities, topped off by a West County Caterers’ black-tie dinner and casino night on the Saturday. Fitting in some of the now famous Hallsannery runs along the Tarka Trail, a bit of rugby (watching!) in the Gentleman’s sitting room and some blustery beach walks, this active pack made the most of Devon. Here’s what Lara had to say…

‘I just wanted to drop you a line to say how much we all enjoyed our stay at Hallsannery last weekend. The rooms are so comfortable, and the attention to detail in the house is very evident. Sarah-Jane and her team made the Saturday night run so smoothly which enabled all our guests to relax and enjoy the celebrations. It really was the perfect setting for our get together and your guidance and support in the planning and preparation made that all possible. We hope to return to the house one day as it has given us all some wonderful memories.’

Our second weekend was filled, once again, with fun and laughter. Celebrating one lovely lady’s birthday, her friends and family gathered at Hallsannery for a weekend of cosy chats, delicious meals and carefully planned activities. Making the most of pretty incredible February weather and Hallsannery’s gorgeous grounds, the group enjoyed a morning of laser shooting on the front lawn, before taking to the tennis court for a segway race afternoon – all courtesy of south-west based Both activities earned rave reviews from organisers and guests! Here’s what birthday girl Sylvia wrote in our House Book…

‘Thank you so much for your hospitality. We all enjoyed your beautiful house and grounds – even had a few hours to explore the area although we’ve left enough to do on our next visit!!’

February half term 2018 is now available so if you fancy a weekend or even a week of all of the above, do get in touch!

Whilst the festive season may already feel like a very long time ago, the memories created by a Hallsannery Christmas and New Year hopefully live on.

Our 2016 Christmas guests came to Hallsannery a few years ago and loved it so much they decided to come back. With three generations of the same family filling the farmhouse kitchen with the aroma of turkey and trimmings, luxuriating over Christmas lunch in the candlelit dining room and enjoying evenings of games and chat in front of the fire, Hallsannery was the most gorgeous backdrop for their yuletide festivities.

‘We have had a wonderful Christmas, thank you! We’d love to come back in 2018’ they said in our Guest Book… and, true to their word, they have booked again, and we cannot wait to welcome them back.

New Year, meanwhile, saw some longstanding friends celebrating a special birthday, with an ‘over-New Year’ stay at Hallsannery House. Inviting friends and family from all over the UK, Mr 50th Birthday enjoyed entertaining his guests with impromptu football matches on Instow beach, blow-away-the-cobwebs walks at Westward Ho!, an impressive birthday tea and copious games of (young and old!) hide and seek. With the accompaniment of not a little fine wine and champagne, 2017 was welcomed in with canapes, speeches, a three course feast and Bideford’s spectacular firework display enjoyed from Hallsannery’s lawns… a most incredible end to one year, and beginning of another.

Thanks to the Bowes family for leaving us these lovely words…

‘What a celebration and what a perfect few days in the perfect location. Hallsannery is a wonderful place; Hannah and Charles, it is amazing what you have done… Everyone LOVED the house. Thank you so much for everything. Truly special’

November 5th goes off with a bang! Posted November 16, 2016

With fireworks going off around the country, Hallsannery played host to its own very special ‘mark the occasion’ party over the weekend of November 5th this year. Celebrating combined family birthdays totaling 110 years, our lovely literary-world clients put together a friends and family house party none of their guests is likely to forget.

Enjoying the House and grounds on Friday, the party then set off to discover the delights of Clovelly the next day, before changing clothes and tempo for the main evening event.

With the talented (and extremely lovely) Amanda Huxtable at Heavenly Scent creating the most incredible ‘book related’ floral displays and Sarah-Jane and her team from West Country Caterers providing the food, the evening was set to be an impressive success. Canapes and speeches in the elegant hall were followed by a sumptuous dinner in the Dining Room of ‘cooked on site’ Hog Roast – complete with crackling and apple sauce of course! A trio of desserts rounded off the main meal, before guests were entertained by Hallsannery’s ‘resident ex-Royal butler’ Eric and his legendary cocktail making skills. The younger generation enjoyed sparklers overlooking the twinkling lights of Bideford and even the odd distant firework display or two, before joining their parents for a bit of dancing and fun.

‘It was a wonderful party – everything we had wished for!’ said our birthday folk… and we have to say that (looking on from the outside) we can only agree!Literary flowers!

A couple of week’s ago, Hallsannery was transformed into a vintage venue for a 60th birthday celebration. Donna and Simon (of fame) wove their magic creating an amazing afternoon tea – quite literally fit for a queen!

With themed drinks on arrival, served by Simon, appropriately attired guests were ushered into the Sitting Room for chat and gramaphone nostalgia, before moving into the Dining Room for the main event. Beautifully bedecked in vintage china and fresh flowers, the cake stands overflowed with sandwiches (crusts cut off – of course), scones and a multitude of mouthwatering cakes – all freshly baked by Donna in our farmhouse kitchen.

If you’re coming to Hallsannery and would like Donna and Simon to create your very own vintage event, do get in touch, or, for smaller groups, pop down to Riverside Cottage at the bottom of our drive for ‘tea by the Torridge’.

We have had a bumper summer holiday season this year at Hallsannery! The weather has behaved, the gardens have bloomed and the House has (according to our lovely guest feedback!) surpassed all expectations. From wedding anniversary weeks, to 80th birthday celebrations, from first ‘en masse’ family holidays to get togethers with friends, Hallsannery has hosted plenty of love, laughter and general good fun this summer.

We only have a couple of August/September weeks available next summer, so if you’re thinking of coming to Devon with family or friends, give me a call on 01237 439078 and we can chat through your thoughts.

In the meantime, here’s a little taster of what you could be missing!!

‘What can we say? What a spectacular venue for a party; we have loved every minute of it. Mum and dad will never forget their celebrations with all the people they love and I hope we will find an excuse to come back. After recovering from the party, we spent much time on the tennis court and loved our croquet tournament. One of my favourite evenings was spent with the firepit on the front terrace listening to Pink Floyd! The house is so well equipped and felt like home from the moment we arrived. Thank you so much for lending us your wonderful house – we have such lovely memories!’ (Pete & Lizzy’s 60th wedding anniversary week)

‘We have all had the most fantastic week in your beautiful house  – from the youngest (6 weeks) to the eldest (80 years). All 30 of us had a wonderful time celebrating my 80th birthday – even the weather was beautiful! Thank you so much for providing such a lovely venue with all the facilities the family so enjoyed. Many, many thanks.’ (Sheila’s 80th birthday celebration)

‘Thank you so much for a truly memorable stay. The house is so beautiful and we had everything we needed. There were 32 of us holiday for the first time all together and it worked so well here. We really appreciated the attention to detail – fresh flowers in the hallway, scones freshly baked, toiletries in the bathrooms and tea and coffee in our rooms. Thank you so much’ (Family holiday)
