A good old-fashioned family Christmas! Posted January 15, 2016
Christmas – a time to get together, in front of the fire, to enjoy the company and comraderie of family and friends. And hosting a Christmas at Hallsannery allows you to do just that. With presents stacked under the magnificent tree, towering high in the spiral stairwell, the impressive Dining Room table laid for 20 (and room for plenty more!) and the kids tucked up in one of the 3 sitting rooms in front of a Christmas classic, the House comes alive with laughter and chatter. Our festive family had this to say about their stay on the Estate…
‘Hallsannery House! What a wonderful Chistmas – a robust, beautiful house which has catered for us all in such splendour. From the best game of sardines EVER to fine dining, Boxing Day disco, charades and much more. Four families united forever by their children, ageing from nearly 70 to just 3 months old… we have all had a truly memorable family time, full of fun and laughter.
Thank you for your initial relaxed and welcoming beginning to our fabulous holiday in this wonderful house!’
6oth Birthday Celebrations… butler and all! Posted December 23, 2015
The run up to Christmas at Hallsannery has been nothing short of magical! With two glorious (and very personal) Winter Weddings, a corporate meeting and a Cancer Research Charity ‘Carols by Candlelight’ concert, it’s certainly been a December to remember.
And to top it all before our Christmas guests arrive, a very dapper gentleman chose Hallsannery as a venue to celebrate his 6oth birthday. Filling the House and Coach House with family and close friends, the guests were treated to an (apparently pretty competitive!) archery morning courtesy of Simon at Phoenix Leisure, pre-dinner cocktails under the tutelage of ultra-professional butler, Eric, from Cecile’s coffee lounge and a sumptuous banquet laid on by the wonderful team at West Country Caterers. After their amazing weekend, Mr and Mrs Treadaway had this to say…
‘We have had a wonderful few days at Hallsannery House – a perfect venue for my 60th birthday. A great opportunity to meet family and friends in lovely surroundings and comfort. Hope to come again at some future time… meanwhile many thanks and a Happy, Healthy, Prosperous New Year!’
Thanks, Ian, for your kind words and wishing you a fabulous Festive Season from all of us at Hallsannery!
Beautiful May memories with the rhododendrons in full bloom! Posted October 2, 2015
We have had a cracking summer so far here at Hallsannery! Whilst the weather (to date) has not always been the kindest, it doesn’t seem to have dampened the spirits of our wonderfully enthusiastic guests… groups of families and friends enjoying week-long Hallsannery holidays and celebrations who have clearly made the most of the scenery, the space and the sporadic sun!
Here are some snippets of Summer 2015 feedback…
‘Thank you for a wonderful week in this beautiful house – we have enjoyed beaches, surfing, walking the Tarka Trail but the highlights of the holiday were the wonderful times spent relaxing in the house – there was always something to do – either a game of tennis, a quiet chat in the library or a fun filled evening with of course plenty of champagne!’ (50th Birthday celebrations, July 15)
‘Thank you from all of us aged 9 weeks – 69 years for a wonderful week. The house is amazing and the lovely views and sports facilities very popular. Hope we can return!’ (Extended family celebrations, July 15)
‘We have had a truly wonderful holiday. Ages 7 – 84 years – we loved the house and gardens… wonderful beaches, walks and cycle trails. Thank you, Hannah, for looking after us so well.’ (Family holiday, August 15)
‘We have been most fortunate to spend a week at Hallsannery celebrating an 80th birthday… this time together in the beautiful setting of Hallsannery has been inspirational. We very much hope to come again!
‘This has been the most wonderful house and location for a large family gathering – love the firepit!’
‘Bloomin’ awesome’ (80th birthday celebrations with guests from all around the world, August 15)
‘We cannot thank you enough for sharing your wonderful house and grounds with us. It has been wonderful for our family for all the generations – the children have loved exploring and the adults have enjoyed the wonderful views! It is such a beautiful house – magnificent yet homely, you have created a fabulous house that will ensure we treasure lovely holiday memories for many years to come. Now I must sign off before I use the word ‘wonderful’ again!!‘ (Family celebrations, August 15)
Obviously we don’t mind the word ‘wonderful’ at all… and ‘awesome’ – well, that’s wonderful too!
Happy (continuing) holidays from all of us at Hallsannery!
‘Hen weekends at Hallsannery? Is that really a good idea?’ After last weekend’s gorgeous gaggle of girls, the answer has to be a resounding ‘yes!’.
Filling the rooms with best friends, mothers and in-laws to be, our lovely Bride luxuriated in the beautiful surroundings of the House and Estate. With a ‘Star Wars’ theme (the cardboard cut out groom came too!), guests were welcomed with tea and homemade brownies, before undoubtedly moving onto something stronger.
Braving the slightly chilly winds of Westward Ho! for beach games on Saturday, the sun shone on the party all day Sunday, allowing the ladies to use the gardens and lawns to full effect for not a little sunbathing and quite a lot of chat. Topping off the weekend with a barbque and a bit of fun and games, our guests left this morning vowing to return.
Here’s what they had to say about their stay…
‘We had THE best time here. Everything we could have wished for was provided. It felt like we were staying at Downton Abbey (minus the staff!). Would definitely come back! Signed: The FIRST EVER Hallsannery Hens!’
Rest assured lovely ladies, Force be with you or not, we’d gladly have you back!
Golden times for a Golden Wedding! Posted April 28, 2015
Increasingly we don’t seem to have high and low seasons at Hallsannery. Because increasingly we are hosting a number of special occasions, and obviously those special occasions – birthdays, anniversaries or ‘marking-the-date’ events – fall when they do… whatever the season, whatever the weather.
One of the great things about Hallsannery (so we are told by our guests on a gratifyingly regular basis!) is that there is plenty of gorgeous space inside the House, as well as out, so that if the weather is less-than-kind for that special event, it frankly doesn’t matter! With a ‘Gentleman’s’ reception room for communal sport or film watching or a game of chess, a ‘Ladies’ sitting room for curling up in front of the fire with coffee and a book, not to mention the Library with its giant smart TV, DVDs and oodles of toys if required, there are opportunities for play, for chat or for just being still.
Add to the reception rooms the large and welcoming farmhouse country kitchen which is, inevitably, often the hub of the House – the refectory table ideal for lingering breakfasts and communal cooking. And once prepared, feasts take place in the Dining Room which, resplendent in candles and white linen cloths, can host all of the special occasion party in one elegant space.
Recently we hosted one of these very special events. The lovely couple, celebrating their Golden Wedding anniversary with close family and friends, took over Hallsannery in potentially chilly February… but didn’t let the cold put them off! Here are a few of their kind words…
‘We all fitted beautifully into your house… we had a wonderful, warm, loving, happy fun time. Henry (4 years old) summed up your house, its facilities and your administration when he said, “I’m going to stay here, Grandma!”. Speaking for all present we enjoyed the occasion immensely and the house contributed considerably to that.’
Well, Henry – we’d be delighted to welcome you and your family back!
A week-long 40th birthday celebration might sound like a big undertaking but that’s just what our February half-term guests had planned for Hallsannery.
Filling the House with family and friends, they set out to explore and enjoy all that Devon has on offer … and were blessed with fantastic February weather to boot! Here are just a few of the ways they filled their days (and evenings!)…
Hiring bikes from Fremington Quay and cycling along the Tarka Trail to Instow – picnicking on the beach (with the obligatory ice-cream!)
Pony trekking along the Devon lanes from the just-round-the-corner-from-Hallsannery LA Stables
A West Country Caterers ‘Sarah-Jane special’ birthday dinner … canapes to start and profiteroles for pud!
Long beach walks and cliff-top wanders
A relaxing spa day at Hartland House spa
… and much, much more!
Here are a snippet or two of their comments on the week …
One of the most gratifying aspects of looking after Hallsannery, is that many of our guests leave promising they’ll be back. And, since re-opening in 2013, guests have indeed returned to repeat their fabulous experiences – the ultimate feedback for us, the House and Devon at large.
In the ‘we’ll be back!’ vein, last weekend we hosted a very special event. Our first ‘post-refurbishment wedding couple’ returned to Hallsannery for the joint christenings of their beautiful daughter and their gorgeous nephew. Despite the somewhat arctic conditions, a host of family and friends enjoyed the calm and space afforded by the House, putting on a scrumptious post-Christening tea in the Dining Room, lighting the fire in the Drawing Room and snuggling down – curtains drawn – to celebrate and chat. Here’s what the respective mums had to say…
Marquee weddings at Hallsannery Posted January 15, 2015
If you’re planning a slightly larger wedding, just want a little bit more space or have always dreamed of celebrating your marriage under canvas, a marquee at Hallsannery could be just what you’re looking for!
Since re-opening in 2012, we have hosted a number of marquee weddings, each one with the personalised touches which make your wedding YOUR own. From ever-so-elegant traditional white marquees with ivory drapes, to stunning cone-shaped tipi tents evoking African dreams, to the more modern transparent marquees where you can dine under the stars, the lawns at Hallsannery can house marquees of all shapes and sizes.
For an ‘orangerie’ feel, put your marquee on the East Lawn where a bespoke piece attaches the space to the House so that if the weather does its worst, you won’t even have to step outside. An East Lawn marquee allows you to move seamlessly from the Dining Room to the marquee for your wedding breakfast, before perhaps moving back into the Dining Room for an evening bar, disco and dancing. Style-wise, the transparent marquee approach allows you to enjoy the feeling of being outside whilst being snug and protected from the elements within, whilst the addition of clear windows or push-back sides to a traditional marquee (http:/marqueessouthwest.co.uk) provide stunning glimpses through the fairy-lit bamboos to Bideford beyond.
For something amazing and very different, try a tipi tent (or 2!) on the Front Lawn, affording amazing views over the parkland and Estuary. Open-fronted, the tipis offer opportunities for fire pits, ‘chill out’ zones, bar areas and dance floors and the styling possibilities are absolutely endless! Take a look at http://worldinspiredtents.co.uk for ideas on how your tipi might work.
For seating from 80 to 180, a marquee at Hallsannery is more than ‘just a tent’. A marquee at Hallsannery means creating your wedding, your way.
The ultimate family Christmas at Hallsannery Posted January 7, 2015
Christmas is a time for decadence, a time for luxury, a time to wrap up from the cold and keep cosy and warm. Most of all perhaps, it is a time for spending with friends and family, for chatting, for eating, for giving and receiving presents. For catching up from the chaos of the modern world. This last Christmas at Hallsannery saw one lovely family doing a little (or maybe a lot!) of all of the above.
With three generations sharing the gorgeous accommodation in both Hallsannery House and the Coach House, there was plenty of space for everyone. From the older members of the family to the two year old twins, everyone had their own private space but could come to together too – to share in family feasts in the decorated Dining Room, to hand out gifts from under the magnificent tree under the spiral stairs and to indulge in fireside evenings and games in the elegant Drawing room.
Here are some of our guests very kind words…
‘What a wonderful Christmas we all had at Hallsannery, everyone LOVED it. The house is so comfortable and there is such a special atmosphere there with it being big enough for everyone to have their own space and cosy enough that it is like home from home, the perfect combination!’
And here are a few more…
