A day workshop to explore locally found earth pigments; their history, geology, chemistry and uses as paint. We will spend the morning collecting a variety of colours from their geological source at Greencliff, where a seam of the locally unique ‘Bideford Black’ is exposed. Then we will return to Hallsannery to experiment with the process of paint making and to create some pictures of our own.
Since people began to make marks and symbols we have used pigments from the earth. Whether painting on cave walls or our bodies we have found ways of making colours from the resources available in our immediate surroundings. In North Devon we are lucky to have an exciting range of easily accessible natural pigments. It is hoped that the use of such local materials and an understanding of their history and formation may bring us to a new appreciation of our environment and the earth as a whole.
“This was a very good educational workshop for students of all ages and
I would not hesitate to recommend further workshops with Peter to other interested groups.” Caroline Preston, Arts Education and Course Development Leader, Beaford Arts
