What we do so far at Hallsannery:
Supplies

Local produce is used wherever possible.
The policy of the Centre is to avoid the use of GM foods.
We use our own beef, lamb and pork and grow a range of salad crops, soft fruit and vegetables for use in the Centre.
Recycling
The
Centre recycles drinks cans, food cans, plastics and paper and
composts vegetable waste where appropriate. Recycling bins are
placed at strategic locations in the Centre.
Lighting
:
Low energy light bulbs
are
used throughout the Centre and associated buildings. Electricity supplies are on an EDF
Green tariff sourced from renewables.
Centre Grounds :
The grounds are managed sensitively to enhance their
conservation and landscape value. Some of the estate is managed
under the DEFRA Countryside Stewardship scheme. This year we
have been awarded County Wildlife status.

Light tubes

Light tubes which bring
light through mirrored tubes to potentially dark corridors and
kitchen areas have been installed in several areas in adjacent
buildings
Solar hot water
One of the staff houses to the
rear of the main building has solar hot water linked to a woodburning Rayburn.
Insulation
The Centre is
maximising loft
insulation and installing secondary double glazing where
possible in the main house. The original wooden internal
shutters are closed at night to retain heat.
Water Use
The Centre is reducing
water use where possible. We have installed
IFO 'Airflush'
waterless urinals in the male washrooms.
Gardens and polytunnels are watered using rain water ( 3x 1000litre IBC containers collect rainwater) or well water.
Field
site use
The Centre attempts to minimise its
impact on the local environment by using sensitively e.g. by
rotating use of educational field sites to avoid excess trampling, leaving no
litter.
